Why Are Children's Sunglasses Important?
Children may not be as interested in the fashion aspect of sunglasses as adults are. However, because children spend so much more time outside than most adults, sunglasses that block 100 percent of the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays are especially important for them.
In fact, because children spend so much more time outside than most adults, some experts believe that by the age of 18, a person's lifetime exposure to UV radiation can account for up to half of their lifetime exposure.
Furthermore, because excessive lifetime UV radiation exposure has been linked to the development of cataracts and other eye problems, it is never too early for children to start wearing good quality sunglasses outside.
Sunlight does not only pose a threat from UV rays. Long-term exposure to high-energy visible (HEV) light rays, also known as "blue light," has recently been linked to eye damage. Some believe that prolonged exposure to HEV light, in particular, may add to the development of macular degeneration later in life.
Also, keep in mind that your child's UV exposure increases at high altitudes, in tropical locations, and in highly reflective environments (such as in a snowfield, on the water or on a sandy beach). In these situations, children's sunglasses and other forms of sun protection are especially important.
Aside from the protection sunglasses will give to your children, it is also a great accessory to spice up their fashion style. Meaning, it will be protection and style in one!
